The dog days of summer: Create a day of fun in Huntsville for your canine friend
Remember back in May, when summer was bright and shiny new with anticipation of warm nights on the patio, driving with the windows down, wearing flip flops all day and maybe even a trip to the beach?
Now here we are in August, with temperatures creeping higher each day and humidity that can suffocate the fun out of even the most ambitious summer outing.
Yes, there’s a reason these are called “the dog days of summer.”
No, literally, there is a reason.
The phrase originated with the ancient Romans’ fascination with the stars. According to NPR.org, the Romans noticed that Sirius, the brightest of the nighttime stars, rises with the sun in late July and early August. The Romans assumed this major star of the “Big Dog” constellation – also called the “dog star” – was creating the hottest weather of the year.
Of course, knowing the history does nothing to ease our collective desire to shove our heads into an ice box for hours at a time. So what to do about surviving the dog days of summer?
Here’s one idea for dog owners: Why not take the phrase literally and create a special bonding day with our canine buddies?
With that in mind, I came up with this itinerary for my “Dog Day of Summer.” What would your day look like? Join the conversation in the comments below.
Rise and shine
Set your alarm early to take advantage of the cooler morning temperatures and pack in as much Dog Day fun as possible. But before heading out the door, take time to fuel up by eating your favorite breakfast – and making a little something special for your canine friend. Even if your dog typically eats only commercial dog food, a rare homemade treat will set the tone for the rest of your day together. A quick Internet search turns up lots of quick and easy recipes. Some can even be made in advance. I found this one for a “Dogurrito,” a dog-friendly breakfast burrito, at suite101.com.

I must add my two cents worth for Mr. Davie (McDowell Jr.), the Garden District postman. When I lived in the Garden District, it was always a pleasure to see him coming. He let my little rotten-tooth dogs bark at him and nip his heels saying,
